But the truth is, building more muscle doesn't actually make that much difference in terms of how many calories you burn. That means if you build 10 pounds of muscle, with pure muscle, you're going to be burning an extra 40 to 70 calories per day. That's not even the same amount as an apple. During a typical low intensity workout like walking, your body has an elevated level of calorie burning for up to 30 minutes after you're done exercising. Not much of a boost. But with weight training, what you get is a 24-hour boost in calorie burning potential. This is called post-exercise oxygen consumption. The microscopic damage and stress on your body requires that your body upregulate its calorie burning potential for the next day or two. This is where you really get the calorie burning impact. So, while building more muscle will not necessarily help you burn more calories just because muscle is sitting on your body, the lifestyle that leads to building muscle does help you burn more calories. Beyond that, we know that muscle mass is positively correlated with all-cause mortality, better insulin regulation and several other factors that improve metabolic health. So, despite the truth about this myth of muscle burning more calories at rest, it is important to weight train if you're looking at losing fat.
