CBC (cannabichromene): CBC is the second most abundant cannabinoid (after THC) and does not produce psychoactive effects. What makes this compound different from the others is that it doesn’t directly interact with CB1 receptors. Rather, it binds with the lesser-known TPRV1 and TRPA1 receptors within the endocannabinoid system. CBG (cannabigerol): CBG is only found in trace amounts in the cannabis plant, but its precursor is CBGA, the foundational molecule for all other cannabinoids. A non-psychoactive compound that binds directly to both the CB1 and CB2 receptors, we still don’t know much about CBG and its potential. CBN (cannabinol): CBN can produce a psychoactive response, but only marginally so compared to THC. This is because CBN is actually THC that has been broken down after long-term exposure to oxygen. This is why older marijuana may lose potency as THC decreases and CBN increases. Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol: also known as delta-8 THC, is a psychoactive substance found in the Cannabis sativa plant, of which marijuana and hemp are two varieties. Delta-8 THC is one of over 100 cannabinoids produced naturally by the cannabis plant but is not found in significant amounts in the cannabis plant. As a result, concentrated amounts of delta-8 THC are typically manufactured from hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD). Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-9-THC). It is a cannabinoid molecule in marijuana (cannabis) that's long been recognized as the main psychoactive ingredient—that is, the substance that causes people who use marijuana to feel high. Delta-10: is a cannabinoid found in trace amounts in the cannabis plant. Like regular THC—delta-9—it can get you high, but it is less potent than delta-9. Freeze-Drying and Curing Cannabis Buds Professor DeBacco Not a New Method The general concept has been around for many years and got its start in the food industry. This is gaining popularity with cannabis since it can shorten the curing process to less than 2 days. Phase 2: Sublimation Sublimation: The process of changing from a solid to a gas without passing through an intermediate liquid phase. This occurs in nature when ice and snow on the Earth's surface changes into water vapor in the air without first melting into water. The opposite of sublimation is "deposition", where water vapor changes directly into ice such a snowflakes and frost. During the curing process with cannabis a vacuum pump is used to reduce the pressure which changes the sublimation point. There is controlled heat added to convert the frozen moisture directly into water vapor. Capturing Water Vapor With controlled systems the water vapor would be captured as ice to help ensure no terpenes are lost from the process. The terpenes will have to be used in alternate products (not dry flower) such as vapes or oils. Phase 3: Final Dry During this process the temperature is raised to 70-80F which is when the water content is removed and it offers the growers the ability to adjust the amount of final moisture content that remains. With controlled systems this water content is under grower regulation.
